A quick blood draw is performed on the patient and then placed into a device called a centrifuge. This process separated the components of blood so that platelets can easily be extracted. Platelets are one of the four main components of our blood; they contain growth factors that trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration. Once extracted these platelets are injected into the scalp stimulating the growth of hair follicles. Microneedling is then performed to continue driving these platelets. This process will stimulate hair growth and aids in further preventing hair loss.
Patients typically begin with a series of 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. After this series is completed, most patients will need 2-4 treatments per year to maintain results. The number of treatments needed for maintenance can vary depending on the rate of hair loss.
Patients can begin to see results as quickly as four weeks after their first treatment. Final results are achieved 12 weeks after the last treatment.
No, normal activities can be resumed after treatment.
The ideal candidate is experiencing thinning of the hair or the beginning stages of hair loss. Areas that have no hair will not respond to treatment as there is no follicle to stimulate. In these cases, alternative treatments would be recommended.
PRP treatment candidates must have a high enough platelet count to qualify. Individuals with active infections or a history of blood disorders should consider other alternatives for restoring hair.
Before undergoing a PRP treatment, you may need to cease taking certain medications that affect blood flow. These include blood thinners and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Consult with your doctor regarding any changes in medication to ensure safety.
During the platelet rich plasma hair-restoration consultation, your hair and scalp will be examined. Since PRP treatments are great for stimulating hair growth in thinning areas, it is important for us to develop an understanding of the rate of hair loss. This will help in creating the patient’s treatment plan and determining the timeline of possible results.
You will also be asked about your appearance goals and complete medical history. We will need to identify if the hair loss is being caused by an underlying medical condition. Once it is confirmed that you are eligible for the treatment, you will be given special instructions to prepare before your PRP appointment.
A platelet rich plasma treatment requires no major preparation. The session may feel more comfortable for patients who have gotten enough sleep. Patients should also stay hydrated to make sure the PRP concentrate from their blood sample is of the best possible quality.
Smoking and drinking alcohol have negative effects on the treatment, like reducing the amount of PRP concentrate and the stem cells’ ability to nourish hair follicles. Before considering platelet rich plasma, patients must stop smoking for at least a week before the treatment. Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours before the session as well.
Medications like blood thinners and NSAIDs should be avoided a week before the appointment. Foods and drinks like ginger, garlic, onions, and cranberry juice can also reduce your platelet count and must be avoided.
